Most populous counties

Nevada’s population is concentrated in two counties. The five most populous are:

  1. Clark County (Las Vegas): 2,265,461, 73.0% of the state
  2. Washoe County (Reno): 486,492, 15.7% of the state
  3. Lyon County (Yerington): 59,235, 1.9% of the state
  4. Carson City: 58,639, 1.9% of the state
  5. Elko County (Elko): 53,702, 1.7% of the state

Clark County and Washoe County (Reno) together hold 88.6% of the state’s 3,104,614 residents. Esmeralda County was the least populous with 729 people, followed by Eureka County (1,855) and Storey County (4,104).

Largest and smallest counties

Nevada’s counties are large. Nye County leads with 18,181.9 sq mi of land, followed by Elko County (17,173.4 sq mi) and Lincoln County (10,633.4 sq mi). Of the 17 county units, 9 cover more than 5,000 sq mi each.

The smallest are Carson City (144.5 sq mi), Storey County (263.8 sq mi), whose seat is the historic mining town of Virginia City, and Douglas County (710.5 sq mi) at Lake Tahoe.

Carson City and county government in Nevada

Carson City consolidated with the former Ormsby County in 1969 and now functions as both city and county. That is why it appears in the table as an independent city, with 58,639 residents on 144.5 sq mi of land.

Las Vegas is the county seat of Clark County, and Reno is the seat of Washoe County. Much of the Las Vegas Valley, including Paradise, Spring Valley, Enterprise and Sunrise Manor, is unincorporated, so Clark County provides local government there directly.
