Texas’s 254 counties cover 261,268.3 sq mi of land, an average of 1,028.6 sq mi each. The largest by land area are Brewster County (6,183.8 sq mi), Pecos County (4,763.8 sq mi) and Hudspeth County (4,570.5 sq mi).

How counties work in Texas
Texas has 254 counties, more than any other state. Each county is governed by a commissioners court made up of a county judge, elected countywide, and four commissioners elected from precincts. Counties run courts, jails, elections and county roads, and in rural areas they are often the main local government.
Population is highly concentrated. The four counties around Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio (Harris, Dallas, Tarrant and Bexar) together hold 39.3% of all Texans, while Loving County, with 64 residents in 2020, is the least populous county in the United States.
Bowie County, in the northeast corner on the Arkansas line, shows “—” in the seat column: sources disagree on whether its county seat is Boston or New Boston.
